Male Domination In Othello Essays

Male Domination In Othello Essays Male Domination In Othello Paper Male Domination In Othello Paper Male control in the public eye is a disgrace, which has consistently existed, and one that may not stop to exist. Be that as it may, the distinction exists in the manner in which the ladies of the various ages decided to acknowledge such conduct and render themselves survivors of such situation. Comparable to the Elizabethan time frame, and having the characters of Desdemona, Emilia, and Bianca as a main priority it very well may be consistent with state it might have been more enthusiastically for them not to acknowledge it than it is today. Actually, it was not seen by a portion of the ladies and for the rare sorts of people who saw it, they could do just tolerating it as their destiny and attempting to live with it. In talking about the exploitation of the above named ladies in this male commanded society, the two sides of the contention for each character would be investigated with accentuation on their individual battles for autonomy. The reasonable warrior Desdemona as alluded to by her significant other Othello without a doubt battles all through the play. From her battle for freedom from her dad Brabantio, to the battle for her life from her significant other Othello. Shakespeare appears to trick the crowd to feel that Desdemona might be one of his novel female characters who battle for the privileges of ladies. Nonetheless, this force which we see her have toward the start of the play as she discloses to her dad that she loved the field to live with him, to the ones which has been invested on her as she is alluded to as the general slowly blurs away. The main sign of Desdemonas exploitation in this male ruled society is apparent when Iago alludes to her body as though it was the property of Brabantio. He says to him your heart is blasted, you have lost a large portion of your spirit, even now, presently, exceptionally now an old dark slam is tupping your white ewe. This means in the Elizabethan culture, Brabantio like different dads considered Desdemonas body and life to be their full belonging. Moreover, the utilization of a creature symbolism to depict her white ewe doesn't just reflect Iagos underestimation of human instinct however the corruption of ladies in the general public by men. This is obviously the situation for the way that he could express it while conversing with her dad. Desdemona then again, as pretty much every other lady in the Elizabethan time frame appears to have acknowledged the show that ladies are substandard compared to men and are the properties of either her dad or spouse. This is demonstrated when she says I do see here a partitioned obligation. I am up to this point your little girl. In any case, heres my significant other. The crowd would at first respect her dauntlessness towards her dad, however in the wake of getting a more profound comprehension of the plot, it becomes obvious that her union with Othello was not an indication of opportunity yet rather a change starting with one dominator then onto the next. Desdemonas enduring and mortification in Cyprus is profoundly established in the contemptible activities of another man called Iago. Iago persuades Othello that Desdemona is making him a cuckold by laying down with Cassio. She experiences this deceitful allegation since it is a world commanded by men. It is conceivable that Othello takes Iagos words over that of Desdemona not on the grounds that he is really persuaded that she is unfaithful, but since it is an expression of a man over that of a lady. Desdemona simply like Hero in the play Much Ado about Nothing shows absolute accommodation even at the purpose of death. Considerably subsequent to accepting an extremely undeserving slap from Othello out in the open, all she says is I won't remain to affront you. Now, the ladies in the crowd may feel increasingly humiliated and less thoughtful at the shyness of Desdemona. Desdemona voices out her agonies through the willow melody that she describes to Emilia. Her reference to her moms house keeper called Barbary who kicked the bucket singing it means her own torment and enduring as well as one that has been passed down from age to age. Notwithstanding Desdemonas inevitable annihilation as she bites the dust in the hands of Othello, she deserves some kudos for a portion of her couple of demonstrations of courage. Her disobedience to her dad is a demonstration that might not have been exceptionally normal during the Elizabethan time frame in light of the fact that the dads reserved the option to train them when they esteemed it fit and for all intents and purposes had control over them. She didn't just get hitched out of her dads will however she wedded an African. This would have been amazingly uncommon particularly for somebody of her social class. At long last, as she passes out her last reaction to Emilia when being asked who murdered her I myself demonstrates her refusal to acknowledge to be a casualty of this male ruled society. Emilia is utilized by Shakespeare to adjust the differentiation between different casualties of this male predominance. That is, Desdemona the exceptionally modest one and Bianca the whore. Emilia is one character who isn't only a survivor of this male overwhelmed society yet is plainly mindful of her position. This is indicated obviously in her relationship and mentality towards her significant other Iago and her discussion with Desdemona. Emilias marriage is one we see to do not have a portion of the principle segments of heavenly marriage, as Iago is neither defensive nor wanting to her. The couple of discoursed that she has with Iago are loaded up with disdain and affront. He says to her it is a typical thing to have an absurd spouse, This shows the guidelines which the men gave their wives. The utilization of Emilia by Iago as an instrument for devastating Desdemonas marriage and in the long run her demise is the pinnacle of her exploitation. This is on the grounds that it is one thing that she would successfully stop. Her franticness for consideration and fondness from Iago may have pushed her to demonstration indiscriminately. On taking the tissue, she says my wayward spouse hath a hundred times charmed me to take it. I know nothing than to satisfy his dream Her language is as a rule in an irate tone and underneath it lies her lament at marriage and all the affront that accompany it. In light of Othellos abuse of Desdemona she says I will be hanged if some everlasting scalawag, some occupied and suggesting maverick, some cogging, cozening slave to get some office have not conceived this defamation. It appears as though she thinks that its satisfactory for her to be exploited yet not an in honest and benevolent individual like Desdemona. Like Beatrice in Shakespeares Much Ado about nothing, Emilia legitimizes the case for the ladies who are engaged with extra conjugal issues. This is obviously appeared in her discourse while talking about with Desdemona. Pundits have considered this discourse the renaissance supplication to womens freedom. In this discourse, she says it is the spouses issue that their wives undermine them. She methodicallly brings up every one of the things which the ladies need to experience. From when spouses slack their obligations by pouring our fortunes in remote laps, break out in fractious jealousies, tossing restriction upon us or when they strike us. This ladylike discourse resembles a shout out for all ladies and one can envision the alleviation and delight, which it would have given the ladies in the crowd. Through this Shakespeare shows sympathy for the ladies. He likewise by implication alerts the men in the crowd and discloses to them that the ladies have as much explanation as they do to undermine them. It is no slip-up that Emilia , like her courtesan is murdered by her significant other. Shakespeare stresses the point that they are casualties of this male ruled society by comparing their demises. Preceding Emilias demise, she guarantees that she talks safeguards Desdemonas celibacy and recovers her poise by presenting Cassio to Othello. She says I will talk as liberal as the north;let Heaven and the men and fallen angels, let them all cry disgrace against me yet I will talk. The utilization of the word men just among Heaven and fallen angel proposes that a portion of the men like Cassio and lodovico may have paradise like characters while others like Iago and Othello may act wicked. Bianca is by all accounts to a lesser degree a to a lesser degree a casualty in this general public whenever contrasted with Emilia and Desdemona. Toward the finish of the plot, she is the last lady having and the potentials for success are that her status would be raised in the general public if all works out in a good way in her relationship with Cassio. In spite of the fact that it very well may be said that her calling gives her a bigger number of put-down than Emilia and Desdemona would have ever gotten. Be that as it may, it is unjustifiable to expect that it would be a womans want to sell her body and respect for cash. Consequently, we can say that she is constrained into this condition. In a general public where men considered ladies to be simply instruments of fulfilling their real joys, prostitution was one of the urgent estimates which the less advantaged ladies would need to take up. This creates affronts from the men as well as from her kindred lady. Emilia says to her O fie upon thee whore! Her answer to this announcement picks up the compassion of the crowd as it shows her battle to be labeled as something past what she does. She says to her I am no whore, yet of life as legitimate as you that in this way misuse me. On a more profound note, this may likewise be an affirmation of Iagos doubt that Emilia may have had an illicit relationship with Othello. Bianca likewise has her season of defiance when she advises Cassio if youll come to dinner tonight, you may;if you won't, come when you are next arranged for. In this announcement, she shows that she sees a little force left in her ownership paying little heed to how she is taken a gander at in the general public. Cassios exit to pursue her underscores this point. Furthermore, this may make the crowd take a gander at her with somewhat more regard. At last, Shakespeare uncovered the conditions which the ladies in the Elizabethan time frame faces and furthermore presents it in a manner which demonstrates his restriction to it. Moreover, his utilization of these three characters who are of various social st

Marshal McLuhan †Charlatan or Visionary? :: Argumentative Persuasive Essays

Marshal McLuhan †Charlatan or Visionary? Marshal McLuhan has been portrayed as both a â€Å"media prophet† and a â€Å"pop professor† (Wilcox). Despite the fact that his book The Medium is the Massage was dismissed by certain scholastics (Wilcox), it turned into a well known accomplishment outside the scholarly world. His capacity to come up with so much expressions as the â€Å"global village† and his thoughts on how media impacts culture permitted McLuhan to turn into a symbol of the counterculture development of the 1960’s. A few researchers contend that McLuhan’s voice was even â€Å"swallowed up in the well known social movement† (Surette). The word macluhanisme has been received into the French language as â€Å"a equivalent word for the universe of pop culture† (Playboy). Be that as it may, was McLuhan really a spearheading researcher? It doubtlessly relies upon how one characterizes â€Å"pioneering scholar†. I accept that huge numbers of McLuhan’s thoug hts, regardless of whether they have become their own clichã ©s and are not completely comprehended, are significant commitments to our scholarly and social legacy by the way that they are still talked about today. McLuhan’s compositions have opened up a gathering for much conversation and scholarly investigation, and have established the framework for a zone of study on correspondence mediums. In a meeting with Playboy magazine, McLuhan contends that â€Å"man must, as a straightforward endurance technique, become mindful of what is befalling him, in spite of the chaperon torment of such comprehension† (Playboy). McLuhan expresses that his work has the â€Å"purpose of attempting to comprehend our innovative condition and its clairvoyant and social consequences† (Playboy). A significant number of McLuhan’s thoughts concerning media can be delegated innovatively deterministic. He contended that few innovations, alphabetic composition and mobile sort, were answerable for the â€Å"detribilization† of society. By â€Å"detribilization† he was alluding to the production of the person who is liable for his/her own thoughts. He at that point contended that as of late, a â€Å"retribilization† was happening a result of the presentation of power based correspondences innovations, for example, radio and TV. As Playboy composes, this is the â€Å"electronics upheaval that will at last retribalize man by reestablishing his tangible balance†. As pundit Tom Wolfe asked: Assume [McLuhan] is what he seems like: the most significant scholar since Newton, Darwin, Freud, Einstein, and Pavlov - consider the possibility that he is correct.

Capstone in Jordan COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog

Capstone in Jordan COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog The SIPA Capstone Project serves to help SIPA students utilize skills they’ve learned in the classroom to deal with real life problems. This year, SIPA partnered up with Better Work/International Finance Corporation and International Labour Organization (ILO) to assess the Better Work Jordan Workers’ Center targeted at garment workers’ in the Al-Hassan Qualified Industrial Zone (QIZ) in Jordan.  What is a QIZ you ask? It’s an enclosed area with factories surrounded by factory-owned dormitories that the migrant workers’ use during their stay in Jordan. Most of the workers never travel outside the QIZ â€" even when they are there for 3+ years. The idea of the center came out of need for migrant workers’ to have a stronger sense of community outside their daily life. The center provides recreational activities along with training programs (English and Computer skills). Our team will be working on collecting data to create a baseline and sustainability study based on its first month since opening. Day 1/2: Travel The first two days were brutal. Flying into Jordan takes approximately 15 hours â€" 12 on the plane and roughly 3 hours layover. We missed our connecting flight from London (Heathrow) to Amman, Jordan. Luckily, we were able to catch the next flight a couple of hours later. After 24 hours on the road, we finally made it to our hotel. Tough day â€" but well worth the time and effort. There’s also a six hour difference, you can only begin to imagine the jetlag…  Day 3: Workers’ Center After many months of visualizing the center through client class and website information, we finally get to visit the Workers’ Center. The workers’ center is approximately 75mins north of Amman, Jordan. During our van ride, we find out that the workers’ center is open â€" we are excited to know that we will be able to conduct our first round of interviews during the first day. We are surprised to find the workers’ center is a lot bigger than we had initially imagined. It has a computer lab with 27 Dell Laptops, a classroom for English Instruction, a kitchen and canteen and a multi-purpose room. View of the dormitories from Workers’ Center I sat through an English class during the day â€" most of the students in attendance were from Madagascar. I was impressed by the teaching methods but also by the students’ participation. They were happy to be there and even more excited to be learning a new language so foreign to them.  The students were asked to recite the alphabet, some of them even stood up and sang it! During the class, I noticed that the students were helping each other with the pronunciation of the letters â€" hardest letter of the alphabet to pronounce in the room “S”. English class Day 4: Petra, Jordan Today is our only day off during our trip. We decided to go to Petra, Jordan! Petra is about a three hour ride south from Amman.  So many camels! Day 4: Workers’ Center We spent the morning in the Better Work office learning more about the programs that they offer besides the Workers’ Center. Better Work does training with factories in different QIZ’s on sexual harassment but also financial literacy training for workers. In the afternoon, we headed off to the Al-Hassan QIZ. We collected data through our survey and conducted two focus groups with Malagasy workers. The team was able to get useful information for the workers’ center. We will use the surveys and focus group information to get create a report that will help the Workers’ Center with future activities and management. We also set up some sport games outside the Workers’ Center â€" some volleyball and soccer. A pretty good day.   It’s late â€" better head off to bed.  Thanks for reading. Posted by Eder Gaona, MPA 2014 and just back from the Middle East.  A little snippet from Eders capstone trip.

Divides Made By Fences Built - Literature Essay Samples

Divides Made By Fences Built By definition, the structure of a fence is said to be a barrier that controls access or prevents escape from a specific area. In August Wilsons Fences, this definition stands for much larger boundaries being set within each characters interpersonal relationships. The idea of fences being built defines most of the central conflicts within the play from a metaphorical standpoint. The extremely unhealthy social enclosures that Troy Maxsons character forms between his family and friends will ultimately push them all away, leaving him the sole object of isolation. The only literal fence in the story is one that Troys wife Rose wants him to build around their yard. Troy is very uncommitted to building the fence, much like his lack of commitment to his wife and marriage. Instead of working on this project he goes out and cheats on his wife. The purposeful barrier constructed by this affair is explained by Troy with, â€Å"She gives me a different ideaa different understanding about myself. I can step out of this house and get away from the pressures and the problemsbe a different man† (Wilson 1316). He sees his affair as a way to escape, when in actuality it just solidifies the divide between him and his wife. Ironically, the very idea of building the fence in the yard can be seen as Roses attempt to keep her family unified. Troys friend Bono, who is the only person who knows about the affair initially, tries to explain this to the uncomprehending Troy, â€Å"Some people build fences to keep people outand other people build fences to kee p people in. Rose wants to hold onto you all. She loves you† (1312). The fence in the yard is only seen as a finished project after Troys mistress dies in childbirth with their daughter Raynell. This is an important reflection on who Troy is as a person because he only decides to commit to this simple task for his wife once his other options are off the table. The affair was a hold that he had on himself, completely locking him out of the family obligations he should have been committed to all along. By this time, his wife wants nothing to do with him from a marriage position. Rose communicates that she will help raise the baby but that as a result of his actions he is now, â€Å"a womanless man† (1321). Troy has conflicting relationships with his sons, Lyons and Cory, throughout the play. The reasoning behind each dynamic is different but both are unhealthy and turbulent because of Troy. His oldest son, Lyons, who he had through a previous marriage can be seen as a business transaction relationship from the surface. The only time they interact is on payday when Lyons comes to borrow money from his father. There is a negative tension between the two over this loan routine because Lyons is a musician and Troy thinks he should get a decent job. Upon offering to get him a spot at his own place of employment hauling garbage, Lyons tells his father, â€Å"I dont want to be carrying nobodies rubbish. I dont wanna be pushing nobodies time clock† (1292). This upsets Troy because obviously hauling garbage wasnt his ideal career either but he has to make money somehow so he tells Lyons, â€Å"Where you think that ten dollars you talking about come from? Im suppose to haul peoples rubbi sh and give my money to you because you too lazy to work† (1292). Troy blames his sons lack of work ethic on how his mother must have raised him. Lyons informs his once absentee father that, â€Å"If you wanted to change me, you should have been there when I was growing up† (1292). Throughout Lyons childhood, a jail yard fence kept his father from being in his life and this is the foundation for all of their personal conflicts with each other. He missed 30 years of his sons life due to the barrier of prison and because of that their relationship is strained beyond repair. The relationship that Troy has with his younger son Cory is a lot more volatile compared to his with Lyons. Cory is a high school football star, and the once athletic Troy resents this. Troy had to miss out on going professional due to his age and race at the peak of his skills. This shapes a bitterness in Troy that he has chose to take out on his son since birth as he explains, â€Å" I decided 17 years ago that boy wasnt getting involved in no sports. Not after what they did to me in the sports† (1302). Rose is an advocate for wanting to allow Cory to continue with his football aspirations and tries to explain to Troy, â€Å"Times have changed from when you was young Troy. People change. The worlds changing around you and you cant even see it† (1303). The problem is, is that Troy doesnt want to see it. He says he doesnt want his son to go through what he went through but when it all comes down to it, he is jealous that Cory has these opportunities that he himself nev er had. As a result, he tries to control everything encompassing Corys life to try and hold him back from becoming more than Troy ever could. After he forces Cory to quit the team, Cory begins to read through the lines regarding his fathers demeanor towards him and says, â€Å"Just cause you didnt have a chance! You just scared Im gonna be better than you† (1311). This is strike one to Troy after hearing this blow to his inflamed ego. This is a pivotal moment because it signifies the further downward spiral of their relationship. A few months later after all the affair business is out in the open, the divide between father and son is permanently set after a physical altercation. Upon telling Cory to get our of his house, a symbolic dialogue is exchanged. Cory says to his father, â€Å"Tell Mama Ill be back for my things† and Troy coldly responds with, â€Å"Theyll be on the other side of that fence† (1325). This not only symbolizes the wall built between them up until this point, but the forever rift between them that follows. As Troy destroys his relationships with his family, he consistently sill has his friend Bono in his corner. They met in prison and are bonded because of that experience. However, Bono is the first person to find out about Troy having extramarital relations and this causes a distance between the longtime friends. Bono expresses his concerns about Troys questionable decisions as he tries to enlighten him with, â€Å"I remember when you met RoseThat was the first time I knew you had any sense. I saidMy man Troy knows what hes doingIm gonna follow this niggerhe might take me somewhereI done learned a whole heap about life watching youRose a good woman, Troy† (1312-13). Bono, up until this point has idealized Troy into being this great guy, someone he looks up to and respects. All this is essentially lost when Troy destroys him family, the main thing Bono based this respect for him on. He stops coming by the house to visit Troy and the seldom times he does their communication is sh ort and has clearly evolved from a best friendship to a simple acquaintanceship, if that. Troy points this out on one of the occasions and states, â€Å"You aint stopped by in a month of Sundays. Hell, I must owe you money or something† (1323). Bono blames the lack of interaction on Troys new position at work claiming, â€Å"Since you got your new promotion at work I cant keep up with you. Used to see you everyday and now I dont even know what route youre working† (1323). It is evident that the real underlying reason is that who Troy is as a person is not this great guy Bono once believe him to be. Bono sees his true colors and no longer wants to follow Troy because where he is headed is not anywhere positive. Slowly but surely, Troy Maxson destroys all of this relationships by means of metaphorical fences. A structure that is meant to ideally keep people secure becomes the complete opposite for their deteriorating family. He loses his wife a as a result of some childish whim to escape his responsibilities. He loses his sons because he is selfish, resentful, and controlling. He loses his best friend once he sees all the hurt Troy is capable of causing. It is only after Troys death that the family really comes together as one entity again. Once all congregated inside the confines of the home and fence, they wait for his funeral. Troy is finally forever fenced out by mortality. Strike three, hes out.

Ted Bundy Was So Psychotic - 1625 Words

Early Life Ted Bundy was born Theodore Robert Cowell on November 24, 1946 in Burlington, Vermont. His mother was Eleanor Louise Cowell and his real fathers identity has never been discovered. Because of this Bundy lived with his grandparents in Philadelphia for three years with his mother; this was because of the social stigma of birth outside wedlock. People described Bundy’s grandfather Samuel Cowell was a bully and bigot who was a giant racist who beat his wife, but for some reason Ted Bundy has said that he respected and clung to his grandfather. This could be a reason why Ted Bundy was so psychotic; I believe he learned some of his behavior from his aggressive and dangerous grandfather. In 1951 Ted and his mother moved to Tacoma, Washington where Ted’s mother me t his soon to be step dad Johnny Culpepper Bundy. Johnny and Louise married later the same year and Johnny adopted Ted as well; this is where Ted Bundy got his last name. Ted Bundy stayed distant from Johnny Bundy and when Ted was older, he stated to friends and his girlfriend at the time that Johnny was not his real father and did not really like him. Ict Skills Required Within A Health And Social Care Setting

In this section of my assignment I will be introducing the ICT skills required within a health and social care setting. I will state what each of the skills are, the benefits for carrying them out and the disadvantages of them if they are not carried out properly. It is important for staff working in a health and social care setting to have adequate ICT skills. This is because more records and data are being stored online, and ICT is becoming more and more common. Having these skills means they are able to carry out a range of tasks at an easier and quicker rate. Some of the tasks include: †¢ To collect and input data †¢ To access data †¢ To find data †¢ To save data †¢ To store data †¢ To protect data †¢ To share data Collecting and inputting data means collecting information and inputting it into a system. An example in a health and social care setting would be a secretary in a GP’s office collecting information on a service user such as obtaining their appointment time, and then inputting this information into the practises system so that the GP now knows this individual has checked in and is ready to be seen too. This method of ICT is seen as beneficial as it means there is no need for excessive paperwork to be filled out and stored. Although, others do not wish for their information to be collected and inputted into a database system, as they believe these systems can be easily hacked and therefore their data can be used by another person e.g. fraud. Interpersonal Relationship and Billy Free Essays

English (Belonging) Blind Side Essay â€Å"Committing yourself is a way of finding out who you are. A man finds his identity by identifying. A man’s identity is not best thought of as the way in which he is separated from his fellows but the way in which he is united with them. We will write a custom essay sample on Interpersonal Relationship and Billy or any similar topic only for you Order Now †- Robert Terwilliger. This idea is represented in the core text of The Simple Gift and related text of The Blind Side which further reveal that belonging is the understanding and acceptance of an individual which makes them feel included. It is through their relationships with people and places combined with their experiences that help transform their own ‘identity’. Steven Herrick’s novel The Simple Gift (SG) is a verse poem written from three various perspectives of Billy, Old Bill and Caitlin. The text was first published in 2000 and is set in contemporary Australia, in a fictional town of Bendarat. It follows the protagonist Billy and his longing to find his place in life to feel accepted, but it is not until the experiences of belonging with individuals is formed that his identity is shaped. The novel’s structure is non-linear as it involves flashbacks over the course of the story to reflect back on the character’s past. The novel’s first poem Champagne written from Billy’s perspective, expresses the catalyst behind Billy leaving home, this being his abusive father. Billy refers to his dad as an â€Å"old bastard† as he steals his â€Å"champagne and cigarettes†. Billy’s use of a negative tone clearly defines the anger towards his father and their non- existent relationship. The technique of irony is used throughout this poem as it is titled â€Å"champagne†. Champagne is usually symbolic of celebrating an occasion. This represents an idea that Billy is â€Å"celebrating† leaving home. Billy does not have a relationship with his father, therefore has no consecutiveness with the community in Longlands Road. These reasons influence his decision to leave home in search of the new ‘Billy’. The Blind Side shows that when those around an individual are of a welcoming nature, close relationships can be formed. The 2009 film The Blind Side (TBS) written and directed by John Lee Hancock is a contemporary American film. The film has a circular structure which shows the transition of Michael Oher, an uneducated teenager with an impoverished upbringing, searching for a better life. The narrative device of his adoption by the wealthy Tuohy family is the catalyst for his initial sense of belonging. In a series of visual rather than dialogue driven scenes Leigh Anne Tuohy and her family give Michael experiences a diverse group of social circumstances which positively change his life as he becomes a star football player, accepted into the Mississippi University and metaphorically accepted in life. These experiences bring about Michael’s new identity. The opening sequence of TBS opens us to Michael’s old world as the flashback technique is used. The combination of frame shots exposes us to his hometown, and why he wants to leave this deprived, rundown area. The scene shows a sad, lost and depressed boy walking towards the camera with no direction. The use  © (2012) All Rights Reserved 1 of 2 For more info, go to www. hscintheholidays. com. au of a long shot shows Michael’s surroundings, as we connect to his life. It shows that Michael is an ‘outsider’. Through this sequence we also see a train travelling away from the town. This train is symbolic of Michael; moving and escaping his life, in an attempt for a new one. Both the poem Champagne and the opening scene of TBS show in a similar way both personas’ reasons for leaving their hometown. The lack of relationships both characters have with those around has a negative impact on who they are. This is the reason for them leaving. In comparison to Michael’s hometown, Billy describes his area as â€Å"rundown and beat† on pg 4 of Longlands Road. Although we cannot see Billy’s hometown, we perceive that it would appear quite similar to Michael’s. The idea of not belonging is evident in each text at this stage as no close relationships have been formed which has a large impact on one’s identity. The poem The Hobo Hour on page 48 of SG is the start of Billy’s relationship with Old Bill. Old Bill is described by Billy as â€Å"an old man with long grey hair and a beard†¦Ã¢â‚¬ he is seen as a stereotypical ‘hobo’. In the poem Herrick uses the symbol of hands for the idea of ‘giving’. Billy â€Å"hands across† the cigarettes stolen from his father and gives them to Old Bill despite not knowing him. This giving is seen as a simple gift. The line â€Å"burns brightly then fades to old smoke† is used by Herrick as it is a metaphor for Old Bill’s life. These simple acts of kindness show the developing relationship between Billy and Old Bill. This poem The Hobo Hour relates to the thanksgiving scene in TBS. The scene in TBS shows the Tuohy family eating their thanksgiving meal together. The film technique of a close-up is used to show Michael’s emotions over the shared meal as he shows a sign of happiness. Both texts are alike as they show that in giving a simple gift a close relationship can be formed. The final poem of SG is the ending of Billy’s search for belonging. The poem is from Billy’s perspective and titled The Hobo Sky. Throughout the poem, Herrick has used the technique of lists as Billy explains in detail exactly what he is doing, examples include: â€Å"I cleaned the bowls† †I watched until he was out of sight† â€Å"I looked up†. These quotes include the use of repetition of the word â€Å"I† which puts emphasis on Billy’s new identity as he clearly has a sense of self by the use of the â€Å"I† pronoun. The use of Herrick using the words â€Å"deep blue sky that Old Bill and I shared† suggests that Billy’s new life has been a shared experience with close relationships between various characters. In the scene where Michael begins university, you are able to see how the tight positioning of both the Tuohy’s and Michael is symbolic of their close relationships. When Leigh Anne is told â€Å"you’re changing that boy’s life† she replies by saying â€Å"no he’s changing mine†. Like Billy, all of Michael’s shared experiences have gotten him to where he is today. Both Billy and Michael have found a family. Each persona’s close and personal relationships have come from others experiences. Both The Simple Gift and The Blind Side show that close, personal relationships come from shared experiences and it is through this process that one’s sense of identity is formed, creating the deepest form of belonging.  © (2012) All Rights Reserved 2 of 2 For more info, go to www. hscintheholidays. com. au How to cite Interpersonal Relationship and Billy, Papers

And thus, our society flocks to the only logical place to rid themselves of their inability to cope with their anxiety intoxication—the airport.Besides my excessive reliance on coffee and irrational fear of cotton balls, I would consider myself to be a fairly â€Å"calm† person. This is affirmed whenever I set foot into the whirling cauldron of delayed flights and nervous breakdowns, and I know I’m in for some cheap (or with recent airline fares, not so cheap) entertainment—at the expense of others’ mental well-being, of course. We will write a custom essay sample on Aviation Irritation or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page I may be a frequent flyer, but that just means I am a frequent spyer.Just last week I exercised my people-watching skills while sitting at the gate waiting for a flight to Smelterville, Idaho. Popcorn in hand, I eyed all the anxiety-ridden victims, looking for signs of clinical depression or emotional collapse. I began to think this particular airport outing might prove my pessimistic attitude for humans wrong, that I might actually be a witness of peace and monotony, of friendly smiles from fellow travelers, maybe even a few hugs, and heck, why not even a double rainbow radiating across the tarmac?Unfortunately, any such hope was soon â€Å"shot down. † (I made sure not to mutter this to the TSA, however, for fear of subjecting myself to the dreaded, â€Å"pat down.†) After a few moments of talking to himself, a frantic man in front of me proceeded to wave his ticket in the air and yell at the gate agent.â€Å"WHERE IS THE BATHROOM?†Ã¢â‚¬Å"Sir, it is right around the corner across from gate B19.†Ã¢â‚¬Å"WHERE IS THE BATHROOM?†Ã¢â‚¬Å"Sir, there is a sign right there. It is very close.†His eyes glossed over while his stress all but fried any remaining synaptic connections between the neurons in his brain.â€Å"WHERE. BATHROOM. I NEED. PLANE. BIRD. TRIANGLE. FLY.† The guy sounded like a walking representation of the font, â€Å"Wingdings. †Poor airline employees. When they signed up to be a part of this madhouse, did they realize â€Å"personal therapist† was in their job description? I carefully took three steps back to create distance between myself and the frazzled man. The agent, however, appeared unamused at the incident and nonchalantly called security. Just another day.A week later, while checking in for a flight to Paris, I observed a tall, scrawny, nervous man with blue hair check a large box with the word â€Å"fragile† taped around it. The man proceeded to tell the agent that the box contained his â€Å"grandmother’s china† and needed to get on the plane immediately. About an hour later over the airport speaker, I heard a muffled, â€Å"Frank, your grandmother’s china needs your assistance. † I later learned the box contained a ten foot boa constrictor that began thrashing when the box was picked up. The guy wanted his snake instantly at his destination so badly that he was willing to put the lives of airport personnel at risk. Watch out, airport employees, you might be strangled by a careless man’s snake while doing your job!Another time, I observed a seemingly collected young woman quietly sitting at the gate, fingers tapping on her iPhone screen for almost an hour. Wow she looks busy; I wonder how she is able to remain calm! Yet again, my optimism had gotten the best of me. After hearing her flight would be delayed due to weather, the woman stormed over to the gate. Infuriated that she wouldn’t make it to her business meeting, she screamed at the agent, â€Å"HOW ARE YOU GOING TO FIX THIS!?!!† Newsflash! While you may be able to instantly control your Facebook status and Instagram filters, the weather doesn’t #revolvearoundyou. These common occurrences have me wondering if maybe my life is simply too boring. Maybe I need to give in to the â€Å"now† mentality that is stitched into our DNA through Western Culture and stress myself out more to compete with my fellow travelers. Or maybe we should return to our humbler beginnings and just be grateful that we have indoor plumbing.

Reasons for the Civil War essays

Reasons for the Civil War essays Thomas Jefferson once said, Maintaining slavery was like holding a wolf by its ears. You didnt like it, but you didnt dare let it go. (Civil War) Slavery was apart of this nations birth. It would be the deciding factor in the separation from North and South. The separation of the two would cause fear and hatred, which would eventually lead to war. Future president, Abraham Lincoln said it best, As a nation we began by declaring that all men are created equal, we now practically read it: all men are created equal, except Negroes. (Civil War) Slavery was introduced to the lands of North America from the very beginning of English, later American, colonization. Throughout the American Revolution, this idea that all men are created equal was the driving force for change, blood was spilled, but after years of warfare, it was all over; a new nation had been born. Finally, there was a chance to start over, but with this idea of equality came hesitance and there was no change. The question of morality was surpassed by greed and profitability. At the Constitutional Convention, the topic of the Black slave was discussed and after much deliberation, it was proposed that the slave would be treated as three-fifths of that of a White for the purposes of representation and taxation. The only reason why the slave was worth that much was because the Government needed the tax money. If slaves didnt count at all, there wouldnt be two bits to collect in his/her name. Also, at the Convention, the slave trade itself was discussed, but no compromise could be made. In other words, the institution of slavery was protected in the Constitution, the very fabric of this nation. Something that was fought so hard for (equality) was hypocritically passed aside and left alone for the next generation to deal with. Slavery never was commonly practiced in the North. As being a free territory, the Nor...

Examining My Community's Source of Energy Essay

Examining My Community's Source of Energy - Essay Example This paper seeks to establish the sources of energy in Hillsborough County, Florida both at the basic home level and the community level. It will look into the type of energy in use and the approximate cost of energy from the household to the community. This will also include the impacts of the energy source to the community over the time it has been in use and seek to establish new alternative sources that can effectively replace the existing sources with consideration to the effects both to the household and the environment. Sources of energy for the community Hillsborough County in Florida is a community that has several choices on the sources of energy to use. This comes as a result of the availability of several companies that specialize in provision of the different types of energy. Currently, there are around sixteen energy production companies in the area. The common types of energy source in use are coal, electricity, solar energy and wood. However, is worth noting that thes e sources of energy are mostly generated locally which leads to the centralized pollution system to the environment by the well over sixteen companies in the area. ... The coal is also used for the same reason of heat and energy production by the companies though there are a small number of households that make home use of it. Impacts of available energy sources on home and community The discussion about use of coal, wood and the production of electricity are all embroiled in the fact that to some extent, they all pollute the environment. The United States of America is one of the countries with the highest use of coal. In the locality, the disaster caused by the use of coal cannot be undermined. One effect of coal use is the radiation exposure. Coal is known to contain traces of Uranium and Thorium which are radioactive materials that occur naturally occur naturally. The coal wastes from the plants are known to be highly disastrous than the direct emissions from a nuclear plant. The other long term effects of the gases released from the use of coal are those associated with the greenhouse gas release to the environment. These greenhouse gases are of great hazard especially to the ozone layer depletion. The third negated effect of coal use is that it causes so many annual deaths. In the United States at large, the deaths resulting from the coal particulate pollution and ground level ozone without effective pollution control measures is on the increase. The deaths are caused by probable development of lung cancer, heart attacks and the acute bronchitis to the victims. Coal also when used even in traces release methyl mercury to the environment. This is a mercury emission that is very fatal to the plant and animal life. The air emissions related to use of coal in this environment is of absolute interest. There are a

The understanding of modern urban life and the place of a man in Essay

The understanding of modern urban life and the place of a man in modern city - Essay Example In this work Simmel underlined that in conditions of modern city and urban society an individual can successfully develop his skills and abilities, as the economical and political situation of modern and post-modern community promotes individual freedom and flexibility. Simmel underlined that "the city conspires to erase difference by assaulting the individual with an overwhelming and never-ending stream of visual stimuli" (Byram, 2002). This vision is inherent to the spacing theory of scientific rationalism, modern and post-modern experience that fills the space with giant cubic forms suppressing the consciousness of people and their freedom. In Simmel's opinion, our society consists of individuals who interact with each other, and this interacting forms features and specificity of our society: "While there is no perception of society until individuals begin to interact, once formed by the interaction of individuals, the society affects the individuals as an outside force" (Crow Ch. , et al., 2000). Benjamin considered modern urban experience and a new politics of vision through the development of technologies. He underlined that "because of mechanical reproduction, art loses its authenticity. Simmel also underlined that metropolis allows individuals to develop their freedom and art. But in the other hand, Simmel asserted that post-modern urban spirit threats individuality (see above). As well as Simmel, Benjamin had positive attitude to communications development: "Benjamin is positive about new technologies, emphasizing their liberating, democratising influences. Simmel gave more social approach to the communication technologies as interactions between people asserting that they form our society, but Benjamin wrote about the positive attitude to such technologies as film and photography: "New media technologies such as phonographs, epic theatre, and especially film and photography, not only destroy art's 'aura' but demystifies the process of creating art, making available rad ical new access and roles for art in mass culture" (Bicket, 2001). With the development of photography and film human perception is changed, and the understanding of modern and post-modern urban reality is also transformed. The paper has demonstrated two authors' positions on modern and post-modern urban experience and their attitude to mass media and technology development. Both Simmel and Benjamin underlined the importance of technological development and its influence on art, culture and our understanding of social environment. They underlined positive and negative approaches of modern and post-modern urban experience and explained the influence of urban life on people. Simmel's views are more approached to the negative and depressing influence of urban life on individuals, while those of Benjamin are more inclined to the positive perception of technological and cultural aspects of modern and pos

The Definition And Explanation Of Branding Marketing Essay

The Definition And Explanation Of Branding Marketing Essay This essay is about how graphics is able to change the consumers perception about a brands identity. This document summarises how the graphics of the brand is able to create an identity for the brand. The shift from simple products to brands has not been sudden or inevitable. You could argue that it grew out of the standardisation of quality products for consumers in the middle of the 20th century, which required companies to find new ways to differentiate themselves from the competitors. This type of standardisation forced companies to find new ways of distinguishing themselves. Brands such as Chanel have built a contract between the company and the consumer; in fact, the consumer has now become the judge. If the consumer feels that the brand is not for them, they will immediately chose to end the contract with the brand. 1.2 Aim To understand how brands use graphics to entice the consumer. What graphical elements are used to bring in the consumer to the brand? The brands graphics is more than just a logo, or the price of a product, service or organisation, it is also the packaging, the promotions and the advertising, all of which is guided by precisely worded positioning. In advertising, reason informs, but emotion persuades (2011). 1.3 Objectives To identify what branding is perceived as To research the different perspectives of designers, artists and writers in branding To research and understand the graphics in Chanel and Primark To reflect on Primark and Chanel graphics branding and the consumers perceptions 2. Introduction This Chapter was based on the initial research about branding in order to understand what branding does, how it is perceived and understood, thus helping to better understand the basic need of branding and how this is then incorporated into the graphical element of branding. 2.1 The definition and explanation of branding A brand is a persons gut feeling about a product, service or organization. Riston (2004:21) suggested that a brand is not just a logo, an identity or a service. The product is not of existence until the consumer gives it a place in their world of products around him or her. A brands success counts on the individual, not on companies, markets or the public. When the word success is used, it refers to how much the brand is valued by its consumers. What is a gut feeling? Because people are emotional beings, to understand an emotion a person has to feel the emotion, therefore the emotion dictates the gut feeling. In a positive case, a person will feel an emotional bond in their mind. Kotler and Keller (2006:275) assert the importance of understanding how we consumers perceive the brand and what impact a brand identity has on consumer perceptions. One could argue that these ideas relate to brand image, which refer to a brands subjective or perceived attributes. A consumers perception of a brand is vital on how the brand is generally perceived. The image of the brand however is not judged by the product, service or organisation. An experience is the meaning the brand has. Think of the brand as the core meaning of the modern corporation, and of the advertisement as one vehicle used to convey that meaning to the world. (Klein: 2010:5) Naomi Klein refers to the theory of branding as a meaning she says that a brand is a meaning. Klein (2010:6) states that ads where put in place to manipulate the buyer/user to thinking that their lives will be incomplete without their product, service or organization. She says we buy brands, not products. For example, mobiles instead of mail, television instead of the radio, light bulbs instead of oil lamps and so on. Being innovative is not enough; you need a strong advertising method to accomplish a successful brand. Advertisements need to be strong enough to create a bond with the public. Advertising becomes the bridge between the public and the product. Advertising plays a very big part in how the consumer visualises the brand. 2.2 The graphics in branding Why isnt a brand just product? Because a product is made in the factory and a brand is a meaning, made in the mind of a human being, this is why when we combine the product and the brand we are able visualise a sense of emotion but communicate the idea through the media of graphic design (Gavin Ambrose: 5:2006) Ken smith, Sandra Moriarty, Gretchen Barbatsis and Keith Kenney attempt to identify and describe the field of visual communication (2005:10). One of the most important pieces of the visual communication puzzle is aesthetics. The nature and beauty of aesthetics are a language in itself, they question how it is so meaningful to the human eye is mystery. It is suggested that, because of the nonverbal nature of aesthetics, what can be written is only speculation about the nature of visual aesthetics and cannot therefore be of visual aesthetics itself. Malcolm Barnard also questions whether this type of communication can classed as nonverbal (2002:29). Barnard states that the importance of the transmission process, if the messenger does not receive the message that it was trying to portray, then a part of the communication process may have failed in either its medium, or delivery method. The aesthetics of graphics maybe seen as a voice of its own, graphics plays an important role in a bra nds identity. Kevin Budelmann, Yang Kim, Curt Wozniak (2010:7) discuss how a brand is made up of different elements. It is just not the logo the makes the brand. The brand is built from the colour of the envelope the companies distribute to the song that plays whilst customers wait on the telephone. Gavin Ambrose, Paul Harris (2010:10) has raised- you need to get someone to check the grammar and spelling awareness of how the packaging of a brand is important. For many brands the first interaction a consumer has with a brand is the package. Paul Harris (2010: 10) talks about how the feel of the brand gives to the consumer is a secondary interaction. The primary interaction is visual interaction and is the first connection a consumer has with the brand. What does this mean and who said it? Does it need a reference? One may argue that packaging is not only a part of the brand but it is a part of the overall graphic communication. The brain recognises shapes first then colour which helps trigger emotion. Although its easily said, the requirement of the right colour is necessary. Why? Because being selective helps build awareness and expresses individuality. Line, colour, tone, text and layout are what visual communication is all about. We need this method to distinguish a personality of style. Without it we are black and white. Colours represent a mood. In 1923 Kandinsky proposed that there was a universal relationship between three basic shapes and the three primary colours (shown below in figure 1). He believed that the colour yellow and the shape of the triangle to be the most dynamic and active through to the passive cold blue circle. (Gavin Ambrose: 2006:15) Even though the human has not discovered all the colours possible we are able to relate a colour to an emotion, brand or company. Just as a country has a flag to represent its self, we are only able to understand which country it belongs to by the colour or the logo. Red and white is common them present in many of the top brands around the world. When the grocer first went on sale in January 1862 (2012), there was no Coca-Cola. There was no Cadbury, no Heinz, and No Hovis. Many of the brands we know today, love or hate them, use them daily without thought or pointedly avoid, were not. Coca-Cola is one of the biggest world providers. They have the most successful branded value in the global branding industry. Consider for instance a can of coke-a-cola: means are to hold the liquid. Whereas coca cola (brand) holds a set of values related to the product. If separate, the brand from the package you are left with a mental container, a set of fonts, colour and graphics. These together crea te a brand thus giving the brand value. (Gavin Ambrose, Paul Harris: 2010:14) Advertisers Chris Creative Legacy Agency (CLA) believes the core essences for branding is the brand recognition. Without in-depth branding, your company gets no direction, what matters is how you get the customer engage. He believes that the brand needs to build a curiosity and an experience. Connecting the consumer with an experience is what builds the brands recognition. Brand does not have a real definition. The importance of having a brand is delivering the core message. Using different market material and communication and the way you present yourself will help bring the foundation of a structured brand. people are also rational beings why dont you mention branding as a rational solution to a problem? branding as a solution to the problem of how we give meaning to products and companies? (EXPAND) 2.3 Brand identity Rita Clifton (2009: 34) peruses the ideology of brand measurement by power. Brand valuation is an attempt to attribute part of the total value of a firm brand. Nevertheless, brand equity- Especially for brands like Microsoft or Google as opposed to a product, such as Chanel or Primark is like a reputation (it cannot be brought or sold). A brand identity builds and creates awareness for a business. When an individual has trust in a brand they help the buyer to create strong loyalties, dedication and meaningful relations. A brands value is dependent on reliability and delightfulness the brand is able to deliver. This sort of status cannot be sold, where as a trademark can be sold. The importance of economic value is also a perspective that some may argue has an impact of how a brand is perceived by the consumer. Rita Clifton (2009:17) talks how there are far more interest in the brands recognition than there was ten years ago. But there is still an ignorance and misunderstanding of ma ny of the issues. Without the value the brand will not be successful. Jan Lindeman in chapter three of the book brands in branding, talks about how the market value has quadrupled from less than twenty-per cent in 1975 to eighty per cent in 2005. Marty (2006:8) agrees that our society has moved from mass production to an economy of mass customization. Our purchasing choice has multiplied. Another example is Cadburys chocolate, without its branding logo, colour it is just a chocolate bar. The foiled packaging alone would keep the chocolate bar fresh but would result in half of the branded value that Cadburys chocolate has with its packaging Similarly Marty explains how on one side of the business you have your analytic, linear, logical thinking. On the other side the creative thinkers who like to see things emotionally that are intuitive. Marty (2006:20) puts his view on how the best brands are created when a strategic side and supported by the creative. When people start to believe there is no substitute for a brand that is when you know the brand is desirable. On the other had when you compare a product, service or organisation to another you understand that the product, organisation or service you have brought into, can be substituted by another brand. Charismatic brands such as Chanel have successfully created trust and social statuses within peoples minds. The meaning is constructed and communicated by the designer and communicated through the clothing to then conduct the message to the consumers. Likewise another brand which has also created a meaning in their consumers beliefs is the brand Primark. Apple has been able to use the power of fashion and trend to their advantage. Bill Halal (2011) explains how Steve Jobs is a genius at minimalist designs that integrate technology breakthroughs to fill a newly emerging need with unusual style. He thinks success requires listening to the technology in order to discover the potential products waiting to be invented. Any brand can be charismatic but you have to be different to the rest of the competition out there. Otherwise your brain will just filter though, and your brand will become just another brand. In an article written by Mathew Jones (2007) the scientific researcher, writes about explains that all behavioural episodes occur in a distinct spatial context: where we are, has a profound effect on what we do, particularly if we associate the place with a specific event or stimulus. Our brains function so we can spot the difference but also spot the obvious. Through the lifespans of humans, we have gone to many stages of discovering , featuring, experiencing and now identifying what is different. 3. The market Perry Marashal (2006:1) Google can bring thousands of visitors to your website twenty-four hours a day, 7 days a week, or the entire year. Whether eating breakfast, on the go, taking a phone call or daydreaming. The market is now all about creating tribes. People join different tribes for different activities; this helps them to be accepted in a particular social group. These particular groups have been created to separate personalities. A person who likes to read may always turn to amazon. A person who buys electronics may always turn to apple. To be different you have to be focused and create a vivid image aimed at your target audience. The questions a brand must ask of it are: who or what it is and why it is the way it is. So Chanel we all know is a fashion brand that is a successful brand because of the unique user experience it provides. It has become loyal to customers through time. A brand is more successful when it is able to think long term and retain its focus in the brand not the amount of profit. Listening to the brand is important not to the market. Short term profit is not what creates a brands value. The value grows when long term focus is in place. A basic brand model either is the company selling many items, or a company selling to companies to max publicity. A brand is like architecture. It requires logic and beauty to be the best of the best. Nor can a brand be valued if it does not have networks!?!!!?!?!?!?!?! (WHAT DOES THAT MEAN)(reference) Creativity is what gives a brand its power in the market (reference). Companies find it difficult to manage both the strategy and the creativity. You need a balance of both tools to build a strong brand. The reason why companies like Selfridges are valued is that they did not do what every other company does. They created a unique customer experience. Remember the customer is always right! Kotler and Keller (2006:275) say that although competitors may easily duplicate the manufacturing processes and product defines, they cannot match creativity and innovation. Innovation is key to omnipresent the point of view that is dynamic and fantastic. We need innovation in creating the identity of a brand. Without innovation we are like a car with no petrol. We do not move forward and people become bored of the repetitiveness of the usual cycle. Just like in life we need a change day to day otherwise our emotions are tied to being drain and depressed. You have to treat a brand like a human, you need to nurture it until is able to stand up on its two feet. The initial beginning of creating a brands identity is by its logo giving the brand name. The name requires being memorable, protective and likeable. Not forgetting the spelling and pronunciation to be easy. In the market industry, the phrase brand equity is to describe the value of having a well-known brand name. The idea is based on that the owner of a well-established brand name can generate more profit from products with their brand name than from products from a less well-known name. You may also call brand equity as brand value or brand recognition. (Aker: 1991). A great name deserves great graphics. A clear understanding of the key terms used in graphic design will help to articulate and formalise your ideas and ensure accuracy in the transfer of those ideas to others. (Paul Harris, Gavin Ambrose: 2006:7). Graphic design is a discipline that continues to evolve. Ambrose shows how technology has affected communications in the past and how it continues to do so. (Paul Harris, Gavin Ambrose: 2006:274) Coupled with this is the ever-changing taste and preference of society. Which in the 20th century, gives arise to how information should be presented. In many schools and universities across the board, this has become a disciplinary act. So what comes next? Behind shape and colour, the brain takes time to process language. You need a strategy to survive in the big wide world of brands. A logo is able to work across many languages and cultures. It is socially powerful enough to stand alone. We now use the gender to process the message and communicate it but then to pass it on to the gender again, before we would use the gender to pass on the message for other people to receive it We as people need to able to communicate ideas effectively and this is where many businesses fail to be valued. This tends to happen because they manipulate the public into something they are not. It is like receiving your goods and the service or product does not reach its expectations and is obvious. It isnt a sin to manipulate the public but if it isnt done using the right method it will become unsuccessful. We need to be able utilise a successful strategically method to become successful. Packaging is the last chance to build your brand. Make it fun! Why do we use packaging in so many different and odd ways? Many of the companies these days use a varied range of eco-friendly materials and methods to show that they are re-cycling back into the community. They use this as a unique selling point, which also helps the companys costs, sales and advertising. Although this method has been rinsed out we have now created the idea of customer involvement. The Niche market is now able to take the lime light from the big brands to use it as a unique selling point for maximising brand value not profit. Brands that use this strategy will benefit from sales and emotional bonds resulting in a higher value which would mean a more successful, trusted brand. According to Alina weeler (2012), we continue to invest in our core strengths. First, we dont skim on understanding the consumer. Second is innovationà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ And third is brandingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ Were delivering more messages to our consumers WHAT A POOR PICTURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Alina Wheeler (2012:6) http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zFc7Vs9QyC4/TzUsU2Z6XjI/AAAAAAAAaUE/B62UEI-wKFI/s320/coco-chanel1.jpg 4. IntroductionConceptCHANELChanel spring/summer 2013Karl Lagerfeld V Magazine, 2002 Chanel and Primark are two strong brands on opposite sides of the economic market trade. Primark is Cheap and cheerful as one would say whereas Chanel is luxurious and expensive. The aim of this research is to understand how the graphics adds to the brands identity. This chapter studies Chanels history and current brand identity. The reason why this chapter will investigate the historical and current brands identity is to understand why Chanels possible reasons of brand value and its consumers perceptions. 4.1 Chanel Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street; fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening. (Coco Chanel: 2010). Chanel has a strong influence on its target audience. Chanel did not design well for women because she was a woman. She invented how modern women should dress because she epitomised the independent rule breaking women. Caroline Rennolds Milbank (2005:27) suggests that Coco Chanels clothing range was basic. These inspirational quotes give Chanels brand an identity and meaning. According to Ritson (2004:21), a perception is subjective, supported by the individual consumers values, needs, beliefs or experiences. Laforet S (2010:213) views the role of brands in building corporate reputation, over time through advertising and communication. Gabrielle Coco Bonheur Chanel (August 19, 1883 January 10, 1971) was a French fashion designer and founder of the Chanel brand. She was the only fashion designer to appear on Time magazines list of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century. Chanel had a desire to rise above her common origins. Her talent and dedication unveiled her to a successful business and social prominence. Her professional life gave her a platform for the social class society. (2011:45) According to Forbes, the house of Chanel is partly in ownership with Alain Wertheimer and Gerard Wertheimer (grandsons of the early partner Pieerre Wertheimer (Forbes: 2011) reference) Chanel designs S.A.S designs, manufactures and retail fashion. (reference) 4.2 Target audience Chanel has always specialised in items such as simple suits, dresses, womens pants and costume jewellery too. Coco Chanels designs and creations are timeless. (Publication march 4/2011). Chanel represents women who want to be stylish, simple and elegant. Teo jia En views Chanels brand as a very strong brand (2010:7) 4.3 Micro analysis Strength Strong brand image: The story of Coco Chanel, who famously said fashion passes, style remains: Conveys a very strong message of Chanels timeless elegance. Cult Designer Karl Lagerfeld he has known to change nothing but everything for Chanel Beauty is in the detail Chanel is famous for its tweed material, detailed chain, and embroidery 4.4 Macro analysis Technology Macala Wright explains that all luxury brands have challenges with creating a connected consumer experience, especially in the automotive sector. Imhoff advises that, in addition to a companys main web presence on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, they must also participate in forums where consumers have built communities celebrating their passion for the companys products. We always participate in an authentic and transparent manner building a solid connection between our consumers and our brand shared Imhoff. (2012) Social The consumer believes the value of the one who is wearing Chanel bag has a higher value than the one who is not wearing such a brand. The consumer feels the brand equity increases their social value Political Piracy of this bag has decreased the amount of sales Chanel could potentially have. The New York times makes a point that fake bags can function as free advertising for the real thing. I believe that people who buy fake designer handbags may decide to buy the real thing when their income increases. 4.5 Market position Chanels financial expert estimates that Chanel had a third of of Frances fashion and luxury goods sector in 2008 with an estimated value of $10.3 billion. THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH BRANDING?! IS IT RELEVANT? http://www.femalefirst.co.uk/image-library/land/500/p/primark-logo.jpg 5. Introduction http://www.primark.co.uk/multimedia/homepage/home-page-spring-2013/spring2013_webpage_jpegs_uk8.jpg?w=492http://www.catwalkqueen.tv/assets_c/2009/01/Primark%20Spring%20Summer%202009%201-thumb-480748-127835.jpg This chapter looks at how Primark use graphics to enhance their brands identity and the historical origins of Primark. This will add an additional and alternative perspective to what the consumers perceive to be a brands identity. 5.1 Primark Primark is an Irish clothing retailer, operating in Austria, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Primark is part of Associated British Foods (ABF), a diversified International food WHAT IS THIS!? Primark sells clothes at the budget end of the market. The company sources cheaply, using simple designs and fabrics in the most popular sizes and buys stock in bulk. All of the companys merchandise is made specifically for the company and as such Primark has its own brand names. Within both menswear and ladies wear there is one main brand name that supplies most of the fashion labels, which are added to by other suppliers. Primark Stores Ltd, an Irish upstart and subsidiary of Associated British Foods, is second largest clothing retailer in terms of sales and revenue with its existence mainly in Ireland, UK, Spain and expanding further in the Europe. It is believable that soon it will become leading clothing retailer. As this budget, chain grows further out into other parts of the world. It is performing just as well here in Europe. The Manchester Evening News (2012) states that Primark has continued to resist Europes economic woes after an exceptional year in which it racked up  £3.5bn in sales and created 10,000 new jobs. 5.2 Strategic marketing analysis Using different analysis tools reveal that Primark is expanding globally and increasing its presence in the global market; Primark has adopted an approach of Think globally, Act locally as stated by Armstrong, (2006). Primark are expanding globally, but cater needs of the local consumers as well as the current fashion trends in their particular westernized local culture. Primark supports UKs global role by showcasing the best of British fashion to a global customers as well as it reflects how it builds social cohesion and business ethics between customers and its suppliers. Considering Primark has spent next to nothing on their advertising, this statement also maybe support Van den Heever (2000:11), He believes that a brand is not a name, logo, sign, symbol, advertisement or spokesperson. A brand is everything that an organisation wants people, obviously its target market being one of the main aspects, to understand, communicate a meaning about its product and services. 5.3 Target audience Primark have clear understanding demands of their customers. Primarks market segment is the fashion conscious people under-35s with the slogan Look good, pay less. Primark has chosen cost leadership strategy; it means that Primark has a cost privilege over competitors. 5.4 Micro Analysis Cheap price clothing, Primark is known for its cheap prices, The independent News( 2012), states that Primarks retail gross margins rose by 300 basis points. Total retail sales rose by 46 per cent to  £146.5m. Nick Robertson (2012), chief executive, said: It is challenged in the UK. But fortunately we sell to 20-somethings all over the world. Primark can choose competitive prices and produce quality clothing. So right price for the right product will increase the customers satisfaction Primark is on a larger scale than a lot of retailers, and employ over 20,000 employees they have become a part of a lot of peoples lives, they create a connection with their consumers by mass employment 5.6 Macro Analysis Political factors Primarks business polices are subject to government in order to sustain the smooth running of its business Economical, the company has established itself by providing its target consumers with affordable products. The pestle anaylsis (2012) says that Primark have analysed the price of the products of its competitors and then have taken advantage of their price during recession. Their exporting, importing and manufacturing prices are so low, they are able to make profit regardless of the economical downfall Social analysis Social analysis is focused on the demographic changes that might influence the product in the new buying perceptions of the market. The taste and buying target consumer population is the business priority. When other brands launches a new marketed product, Primark surely finds a cheaper alternative for their consumers Technology An article on Marketing Plan, refers the idea of how technology does effect a business how a social or economic factor would. With innovation, technology is able to create a smoother process of maybe a product transaction or improve the quality of the products. Primark could improve the transaction process, as their ques are miles long. If this is improved with the help of technology, the economical profits will be maximised, and social value will increase, as it will be seen worn on more people It can also lessen the unethical working behaviour such as shoplifting which is very commonly occurred in Primark stores. 5.6 Market position Primark offers innovative, fashionable clothes at value-for-money prices. Like many retail fashion businesses, Primark does not manufacture goods itself: it works with its suppliers to produce goods to Primarks specification. Primark relies on low costs, economies of scale and efficient distribution to maintain its competitive market position. 5.7 Primarks Competitors/analysis Like any other business, Primark is also facing tough competition from George at ASDA, Tesco, Marks Spencer, TK Max, Costco, Next, Zara, New Look, Peacock and Matalan. Analysis for each major competitor determines that Primark has better business strength and high market share. It has good financial strengths and high profitability but relatively poor quality of management and low standards of technology position. Primark is paying least attention to its marketing strategies. Marketing represents boundary between marketplace and company, and knowledge of current and emerging happenings in marketplace is extremely important in strategic planning exercise. WHY HAVE YOU ANALYSED IT LIKE A BUSINESS? WHY ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS? WHY IS THIS RELEVANT? 6. Advertising According to Jon Steel (1988:5), the most effective advertising involves consumers in two different but critical ways. Number one, it needs to involve them in the process of developing the communication, their feelings, habits, motivations, and desires all have to be explored and understood both how the product fits into their lives and how they might respond to different advertising messages. Jon (1988:8) follows on explaining the
